Eduard de Lange is a pianist, composer, and physician who was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and whose passion for music has followed him across continents, careers, and mediums.De Lange began music at the age of 6, learning classical piano, before switching to violin at age 9 which he played for 6 years. At age 11, inspired by the music he was hearing on the radio, Eduard picked up the piano again. When his former piano instructor heard of his interest in playing contemporary music, she put him in contact with a pianist who played in a Dixieland-style traditional jazz band and who taught him the basics of chords and improvisation. From then on, he has been deeply enamored with the piano – initially in jazz and stride styles of musicians like Erroll Garner and Fats Waller, respectively, and over time integrating the wider world of pop music employed by icons like The Beatles.

Growing up in The Netherlands, Eduard’s father was a thespian, actor, and director, and his mother was a lawyer, and Eduard himself reflects both the vastly creative and highly professional that was learned through his family. Upon graduating high school, Eduard attended Medical School at the University of Leiden where he became a physician. His medical career saw him work in The Netherlands, Ghana and then in Charlottesville, VA, where he has been on the faculty of the University of Virginia for 36 years. Throughout all this time, Eduard ensured he was able to make music – even if it meant bringing an entire piano and trusty cassette recorder from The Netherlands to West Africa.

Learning and performing piano has been a part of Eduard’s entire life, and with his inquisitive mind, composition has always been too. He composed his first piece at age 13, and in high school and medical school went on to compose for musicals and a cabaret. He has performed as a solo pianist out of a love for music at various bars, restaurants, and casual settings throughout his travels, despite the time restrictions that come with the busyness of the medical field.

Eduard’s composition skills boomed with the arrival of Digital Audio Workstations, which allowed him to record, manipulate, and develop entire soundscapes from the bench of the solo pianist. From here, he has been able to write and record, even recreating and developing full compositions from old tape-recorded ideas. Eduard has composed and released a variety of singles, utilizing soundscapes and band elements from many genres. More recently, he has focused on composing solo piano works, often utilizing elements of the neo-classical style with simple but profound melodic concepts juxtaposed with steady but powerful musical development.

Eduard released his latest album "Songs from the Heart" on all major streaming services on May 30, 2020.
